It’s a new year with new energy to find new customers and solve new problems. And, it seems, many are scrambling to find the perfect new way to find success.
What if I told you that the manual for success wasn’t built on anything new? Rather, success stems from a foundation of old fashioned basics.
Athletes prepare for winning seasons by practicing basic drills. Professors begin each semester by reviewing the fundamentals. Performers improve through repetition of skills already learned.
So, too, businesses stand the test of time by adhering to “not so new” basics. Here are my business building basics for success in 2014.
Focus over fancy. Yes, I must admit fancy is fun. But in reality, fancy is a distraction. My friend, the web trainer, calls it “shiny object syndrome” when entrepreneurs lose focus following the latest fancy trend or chasing the newest idea, the newest marketing technique and the newest social media concept.
This year I’m abandoning the pursuit of greener pastures for the glory of tending my own garden. I’m focusing on who I am, what I do and who I do it for.
Repeat the wheel. In some respects, January will be a continuation of December. I plan to repeat what worked. I will look at past success and do it again. I’m going to stay in touch with current clients, and provide value for repeat business from those who already know and trust me.
Use KISS (keep it simple and straightforward) communication. In this content-heavy digital world, sustainable business depends upon friendraising, relationship building and referral networks. For me, cultivating and maintaining these relationships will come from following the simple and straightforward habits of elementary school communication.
- Be honest and tell the truth
- Be respectful of others
- Use kind and caring speech
- Take time to listen before speaking
